Joanne Barnes is Associate Professor in Herbal Medicines at the School of Pharmacy, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, University of Auckland, New Zealand (since November 2005). Previously, she was Teaching and Research Fellow (1999-2002) and Lecturer in Phytopharmacy (2002-2005), Centre for Pharmacognosy and Phytotherapy, School of Pharmacy, University of London, UK, and Research Fellow in Complementary Medicines, Department of Complementary Medicine, University of Exeter, UK (1996-1999).
Joanne has a degree in pharmacy (BPharm (Hons.), University of Nottingham, UK), during which she specialised in pharmacognosy and clinical pharmacology. She obtained her PhD in Pharmacy/Pharmacognosy (University of London, UK) in 2001, and a postgraduate certificate in pharmacovigilance and pharmacoepidemiology (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine) in 1999. Joanne is a registered pharmacist in the UK (since 1989, now registered as overseas) and in New Zealand (since 2007).
She has been conducting public health related research in complementary medicines for over ten years. Today, her research explores the utilisation, safety and efficacy of herbal medicines. In particular, this has focused on examining issues relevant to the pharmacovigilance of herbal medicines, for example, investigating methods for the safety monitoring of herbal medicines and communication of information on herbal safety concerns. Joanne has active research and other academic collaborations with colleagues in several countries, including New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Brazil and the UK.
Joanne is a member of the editorial boards of the journals Drug Safety, Phytotherapy Research, International Journal of Pharmacy Practice, Complementary Therapies in Medicine and Current Clinical Pharmacology. She is immediate past co-editor of Complementary Therapies in Medicine (2003-2005; Elsevier) and is Associate Editor of the new journal Phytochemistry Letters (Elsevier) with specific responsibility for the area of clinical efficacy, safety and pharmacovigilance of herbal medicines. She is a co-author of two leading reference texts on herbal medicines and pharmacognosy: Herbal Medicines (published by the Pharmaceutical Press, Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain), now in its third edition, and Fundamentals of Pharmacognosy and Phytotherapy (published by Churchill Livingstone).
Joanne is an honorary consultant to the World Health Organisation’s Collaborating Centre for International Drug Monitoring (WHO-UMC), and a member of its herbal safety signal review panel. She is also a member of Health Canada’s Natural Health Products Directorate’s Expert Resource Group and, until moving to New Zealand, was a member of the Independent Review Panel on Classification of Borderline Products (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, UK). Joanne was appointed as a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London in 2003.
In April 2006, she organised, in conjunction with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain and several other societies (including International Society of Pharmacovigilance, European Scientific Co-operative on Phytotherapy, WHO-UMC, Society for Medicinal Plant Research) and chaired a 3-day international conference held in London on Pharmacovigilance of herbal medicines: current status and future directions.
